The Rhodes Ahead

November starts off with such great feast days – All Saints and All Souls. My grandma was very traditional (I might say Old School) and had a strong desire to help the poor souls in purgatory with the belief that every time she went in and out of church on Nov. 2 a soul was released from purgatory. When I got her prayer book from 1952 when she passed away 27 years ago – the pages were worn thin that had prayers for the souls in purgatory.

I know we should pray for the dead. I have Masses said for relatives that have passed away to ensure they continued to be prayed for.  I even put anniversaries of deaths on my perpetual birthday calendar as a reminder to pray. But I was more than a little shocked at 6:30 am Mass on Friday with Fr. Zarse’s homily.

Fr. Zarse said that from Nov. 1-8, the graces of heaven are open wide for those who visit a cemetery and pray for the dead. I will be visiting a couple of cemeteries to ensure that the church militant (those Catholics practicing the faith now) do our share for the church suffering (the souls in purgatory) so that we can all be part of the church triumphant (those enjoying heaven now).

I found this with a quick google search from a parish bulletin on why we pray for the dead, “This process has already begun in our lives on earth. Through doing penance and accepting in faith the inescapable sufferings of this life, we can be purged of sin’s effects and grow in holiness. Nevertheless, few seem to be perfect when they leave this world. They still need some purification, a painful but purging “fire,” as Scripture calls it (see 1 Corinthians 3:14–15).

That’s precisely why we pray and offer Masses for those in purgatory. As Scripture tells us, our intercession helps them: “For it is . . . a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins” (2 Maccabees 12:46, Douay).”

I pray because like my dear friend Rene Garnett said, “Pray for me to be in heaven so that I can intercede for you – I worry that people will think I am there and not pray for me.”

May the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace.

SHOJ Scholars Bowl Competes!

Scholars Bowl at St. James 2023

SHOJ Scholars Bowl teams competed at St. James Academy on Monday. A total of 24 teams from Catholic middle schools across the Metro area competed. Our students faced some strong competition and had a blast! They're already looking forward to the opportunity to compete again. A huge THANK YOU to SHOJ parent, Janae Melvin, for her leadership in organizing and coaching our Scholars Bowl students!

Consecration to St. Joseph

Calling all the men of our parish community, join Fr. Jaime Zarse in a 33-day journey to Consecration to St. Joseph!  (Everyone is called to consecrate to St. Joseph from the beautifully written book by Donald H. Calloway, MIC - but this session is for men who are leaders and future leaders of a Domestic Church!)

From His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal burke, DD
In the most troubling situation in which the Church finds herself today, the fatherly protection of St. Joseph, first exercised in the Holy Family and then in the universal Church, is now more needed than ever.  Drawing upon the long tradition of devotion to St. Joseph, Fr. Calloway invites us to consecrate ourselves to the heroically pure and just St. Joseph.  Consecration to St. Joseph is a rich handbook by which to come to know the wonders of the life and vocation of St. Joseph, to grow in devoted love of him, and thus to invoke daily his protection for the Church.

Next Week's Virtue: Patriotism

Next week we will be working on the virtue of patriotism. Patriotism is paying due honor and respect to your country, with a willingness to serve. We are practicing the virtue of patriotism. Patriotism looks like honoring those who have given the ultimate sacrifice of their lives while serving our country. It also looks like praying for those who are currently serving.

Veteran's Day Mass

On November 8th at our all school Mass at 8:15, we will be honoring the Veterans within our Sacred Heart community. If you or your family has a Veteran special to your heart that you would like to invite, we would like to honor them with a special blessing at the end of Mass. Your Veteran does not need to be Catholic to accept this blessing.

Please RSVP below if your child(ren) will attend a short reception after Mass with a Veteran:
