The Rhodes Ahead

At Sacred Heart, we prepare minds for the future and souls for eternity by providing excellent academics while supporting parents in teaching the beauty of our Catholic Faith.

Each Sunday the school families get a voice message about the upcoming week. The call usually goes out about dinner time and the first thing that families hear about is the virtue of the week. This year we are using education in virtue in the building to meet the state requirements for social/emotional learning and anti-bullying curriculum. Each virtue is aimed to help us focus on attaining the habit of doing good and establishing a culture that will be a means to a good, happy life while having a relationship with God our Father.  Can you imagine if all schools used Jesus' teaching as basis for growing social skills and human development?

Research has shown that the four fundamentals of balance, resilience, insight and empathy allow the brain to be open and receptive to a learning environment - these four mirror the Cardinal virtues of temperance, fortitude, prudence and justice precisely. Practicing things like humility, industriousness, foresight, and affability develop those four fundamentals.

Next Week's Virtue: Moderation

Next week we will be working on the virtue of moderation. Moderation means giving attention to balance in one's life. It means giving yourself time to pray, work, study, and play each day. Moderation sounds like, "I did not spend too much time on the computer or watching TV."

Do I go to bed when I'm supposed to? Or do I try to find excuses for staying up late when I know I need my rest?

Our Lady practiced this virtue. When Jesus was a child, she spent her days caring for Him and St. Joseph. She had to balance her household tasks, with spending time teaching or playing with her Son.
