The Rhodes Ahead

As I posted the reel from middle school today, I realize that my dance parties out front are nothing compared to what is happening back there during Friday drop offs. It is so fun celebrating together.

Fat Tuesday (the day before our observance of the Lenten Season) is this coming week and we are going to celebrate Valentine’s Day with free dress and class parties. This year Ash Wednesday is on Feb. 14 and when making the school calendar I knew that this was not the day to celebrate a secular holiday. Ash Wednesday moves based on when Easter is celebrated. Easter is determined by the first Sunday after the first full moon of the spring equinox. Easter is early, March 31 and counting back, puts Ash Wednesday on Feb. 14.

We also learned last week that should there be a parade celebrating a Superbowl Victory, it will be then. I couldn’t agree with Dr. Rapp more as he put in his parent email:

“We don’t find it appropriate to cancel school to make it easier to celebrate a secular achievement when it is scheduled on one of two days a year the Church calls us to fasting, abstinence, and deep reflection on our mortality. One is simply more important than the other. We are asked to live that day in quiet reflection and a spirit of penance, and a parade is simply not in keeping with that spirit.”

In the big picture of what will get us to heaven, this is it. In the past, we have also had snow days available to be used and this year we don’t. We will be in school and yes I still hope that the Chiefs are victorious.

Finally, it is that time for the state of the school address. Please click here to enjoy a five minute video that Fr. Zarse and I made.

Next Week's Virtue: Modesty

Next week we will practice the virtue of modesty. Modesty is our purity of heart in action, especially in reference to how we dress and how we talk. When we think about modesty, we often thing of guarding our speech and dressing in a way that honors God. Modesty also means not attracting attention to ourselves in other ways.

Modesty sounds like saying, "I don't want to watch that show" or "I won't listen to this song because it doesn't lead me to Christ.

Modesty also means not attracting attention to ourselves in other ways. When I get a good grade, do I make sure everyone sees it? Do I brag when I win a game or complete a difficult task? Modesty helps us give all glory to God.
