The Rhodes Ahead

I am so excited about the parish mission starting Sunday. I always find these insightful and a way to make my Lent even more productive. I hope you can make the three days, starting at 6:30 each evening.

Last weekend the Quo Vadis invitations went out to the parishioners. This event will be a great celebration for the parish to share how God’s grace is working on the corner of Johnson Dr. and Monticello. The evening consists of a nice meal, a program and several toasts!

Many people have fond memories of Brown Bottle Celebrations – finding ways to join together and celebrate while supporting our parish. Similarly, Quo Vadis will bring our community together in celebration. Typically, we have identified specific things that we want to accomplish through Brown Bottle fundraising, but with the facilities master planning committee gearing up to create a new plan, we are forgoing that this year. As the committee makes progress there will meetings for everyone to give input on what we need to achieve our mission and goals.

Finally, At Sacred Heart of Jesus, we know that parents are the first teachers. Parents also teach each other.

Dealing with children can cause us to question ourselves, wonder if we are missing something, and feel like we don’t know what to do next.

If you have ever wondered if the challenge with reading, the complaints from teachers about paying attention or missing social cues could mean something else or if your family has a diagnosis such as one of these, please plan on joining us for prayer, learning and fellowship.

Stacey Yehle, Megan Abbott and Chris & Avery Simms have had on their hearts a desire to share with others what they have learned in helping their own children. There are many diagnoses out there that can seem overwhelming. These three will share their journeys with autism spectrum, dyslexia and ADHD with the hope of making another family’s journey easier.

You are invited to hear a brief bit of their stories on March 4 at 6:30 pm in the church meeting rooms. There will be time for individual questions.

Next Week's Virtue: Self-Control

Next week we begin to work on the virtue of self-control. Self-control means the joyful mastery over one's passions and desires. It is easy to react right away or say things without thinking. Self-control allows us to pause and let reason guide or actions, instead of letting our feelings be in charge.

Practicing self-control also means having control over our bodies. It is sometimes hard to sit for long periods of time in class, but we can use self-control to remain seated and focused on the teacher. Staying seated when we are supposed to and asking to leave our seat when we need something is a way to practice self-control.

Sometimes self-control means not speaking at all. When we have unkind thoughts or are frustrated, we often say something quickly without thinking, and later regret it. Self-control helps us to not speak when we have nothing charitable to say.
