It's funny what your kids blame you for. When I had 4 kids under 5 at the store, we had certain rules. In the parking lot we parked by the carts and everyone had to hang onto the cart ("cars don't see little kids). To this day, one of my twins tells me that when she shops with someone and they have a cart, she is hanging onto it.
Habits become our norms. This is why we practice virtues and safety drills. The skills we practice are needed in both emergency and daily situations. We want the right behaviors to be habits.
This past week we had Shawnee PD come visit the school, walk around, talk about what is the latest in school safety, and answer our questions. We feel very prepared for emergency situations. We will still keep practicing.
As we start the new liturgical year, it is a great time to determine things that you want to practice so they become your norm. Use this time to develop those habits you wish you had in your kids - then they will have it. Be specific. Any goal worth achieving needs to be thought out and planned. Small steps form the best habits. Happy New Year!
